I was walking with my partner around a local, Houston park one morning. It had become our Sunday ritual, going to the park when it was partially empty. There was nothing particularly beautiful about the day. The sky was gray. It was odd mix of cool, but humid. No birds chirping, no dogs in need of pets. Yet, something caught my eye...several piles of broken glass, glittering in the overcast.
"I need this!", I told my partner, attempting to shovel the glass into my jacket pocket with my *bare* hands. Needless to say, I looked a bit touched. Don't worry, we found a way to unburden my jacket, a venti Starbucks cup.
After the walk, I marveled at my own parcel of broken car glass insisting that I was going to use this find so make jewelry of all things. I am pretty sure that was the last thing my partner expected me to say. It was unexpected. In many ways, it's the unexpected that inspires me.
This is one of many pieces I made with found car glass. It's part of my Space Series. The ring back is meant to resemble a space rock, and the glass is homage to the human imprint of space exploration, namely the manufactured items we tether to ourselves. In my vision, we upcycle, adding broken vehicle glass to our personal adornments the same way our ancestors made the first pieces of jewelry with shells, rocks, bone, etc. found when traveling.
